HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2002 on the initiative and under the personal guidance of Professor Aknazarov B.K. The department is a graduate chair type. The enrollment of students majoring in 720200 –”Biotechnology” is carried out from 1 September 2002 in accordance with the training program for Biotechnologists – Engineers. The Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor M.A. Arzybaev made a great contribution to the formation of the department, he has been the head of the department since 2003. The following eminent persons have been employed with the department: Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor Aknazarov B.K., Professor Abdrasulov Y.A., Associate Professor Smailova T.S., Associate Professor Bondarenko E.P., Senior Lecturer Marasulov A., Assistant Kasymova K.T.
In September 2011 the department was merged with the Department of Biology and renamed to the Department of Biotechnology and Biology. After 3 years in 2014, the department is experiencing the next merger, now with the Department of Chemistry that was established in 1935 and is currently named the “Department of Biotechnology and Chemistry”. Since 2012, the department is providing undergraduate and graduate programs majoring in 720100-Biotechnology.
Composition of the Department
Bachelor’s Degree majoring in 720100-Biotechnology
Duration of study: based on the general secondary education – 4 years
Master’s Degree majoring in 720100-Biotechnology
Duration of study – 2 years
Since 2012, scientific-research work has been carried out at the department within the framework of projects of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic. Employees and doctoral candidates of the department proposed in veterinary practice such fundamentally new anthelmintic drugs as “Almegum” and “Alpemed”, “Asmegum” and “Khimedol”, which demonstrated high efficiency in intestinal helminthiases. In addition, scientific-research work is being carried out on plant biotechnology: virus-free potato seeds have been developed, as well as biotechnological activation of soil microorganisms, which increases crop yields in the mountains conditions of Kyrgyzstan.
Scientific works were carried out by the Professor Arzybaev M.A. in the sphere of “Development of antiparasitic agents from local raw materials and the study of their pharmaco-toxicological properties”. In 2005 he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in Moscow. In addition, the department has two more candidate dissertations of Toimbetov M.T. “Anthelmintic and pharmaco-toxicological properties of Almegum” (Moscow, 2006) and Azhybekov N.A. “Pharmaco-toxicological characteristics of Alpemedi” (Moscow, 2009).
Currently, under the guidance of Professor Arzybaev M.A., 3 graduate students are working on their research projects.
